My Bolivian Birthday

Turning 24 in Bolivia....

I got a birthday cake at work!

So apparently, the "tradition" is that the birthday girl/boy has to take a bite of the cake...

Fell for it...

But it was yummy. Had strawberry cream and dulce de leche fillers
Unfortunately, I had to spend some time at immigration in the afternoon. Everyone's just as happy and helpful as at the DMV...  >_<

BUT, it got better.  I had a pizza party at my host family's house:

We ordered a HUGE, like biggest pizza I've ever seen huge, pizza (cheese and tomato) from Eli's NY Style Pizzeria. $32 USD!!! (230 bs) everyone pitched in though so that was nice

Caught you, Ryan! Mr. "I hate cats."

Maybe made me a beautiful cake with rose petals on it. It was vanilla with pink lemonade soaked into it with a chocolate, strawberry cream center. Yum!

The candle kept blowing out, so we put a "5" on there...making me "15", which is actually a big party for girls here, the quinceañera  (15 years old [girls only], like our sweet 16, but way more done up and ridiculous!)

They wanted me to do the "traditional" birthday girl bites the cake thing.... as you can see I'm hesitant.

But I was a good sport. (look how thrilled my host siblings are!)

My host brothers donated some fancy/sparkly stuff they got at previous quinceañera parties

My Bolivian buds. They crack me up!

And a French guy, who is also really fun(ny).

Orejas

After the party died down, we played cards. Can always count on these boys to keep the party going!

Playing that 20 questions - who/what am I?

One friend got "castor," or beaver. He asked "Am I real?" and half the table answered "no" lol.... they've never seen a beaver before, and it's just a cartoon logo for a local empanada place, so they didn't believe it was real! hah

 Rodrigo

Sergio and Enzo

Crackin' me up....note the French guy, Jean, washing dishes still... what a sweetie.

They convinced me to go do karaoke....so taxi ride!! What sports, wearing the sparkly bows out!

Cultural note: everyone shares (alcoholic) drinks here (hence why all our friends got strep throat! hah)

The next day, Surya, the girl from Holland, took me out to lunch for my present. We went to Gopal, an all vegetarian (hard to find here) buffet. Que rico!

Then later that night we went out for sushi to say goodbye to our resident Scotsman, Allan. You'll be missed!
